It looks like after 4 and a half months of waiting we may actually be a week away from getting the keys to our new condo. We first saw it Thanksgiving weekend and have had our fingers crossed ever since. I have to admit that in the last month or so the waiting has become challenging. We both seem to be feeling very restless which has not translated into saving money or losing weight.
I know this is the same problem I always seem to have, but now it' supposed to be temporary. After we move we keep talking about how we'll cook at home and hang out on the deck etc. What it we're just as restless as always? What if we get bored cooking in and hanging out right away? I admit I'm starting to feel nervous. This is a big life change so I guess it's actually normal to be having all kinds of feelings and emotions. Frankly I'm tired of it and also just plain tired. I can't wait to stop thinking about everything and start doing things!
On HGTV people always say cliche things about buying a home like "start living our lives" or "put down roots" I always roll my eyes, but the fact is living in limbo is annoying. This whole year has been about getting a place and we are so close. This will all be so worth it if I can just make it to the finish line.

Turn Around
Friday is usually my favorite day of the week, but today I'm just not feeling it. We're supposed to be saving money, but we've already been out twice this week. Now it's the weekend and it's sunny but we really shouldn't go out. Also, things just aren't going as well as I'd hoped for my four days off. We're both stressed out about this house stuff and this apartment is really starting to get on my nerves. I know this is just a bunch of complaining, but I was hoping I would feel better if I got it all out and got some perspective.
I really need to remember that this is not the last Friday that will be sunny. I have had plenty of fun already this week and there is no reason I can't enjoy a little down time. I would like to save money and lose some weight and going out will not help me accomplish either of those things. It's not even that warm out and it's supposed to be windy. We had a little tiff this morning and I think that's probably what's really bothering me. We made up, but it's just not the same for a while after a disagreement. Now it's the weekend that I was looking forward to and I don't seem to be enjoying myself which makes me feel sad and guilty and then it's just a big circle of crap.
So, what to do now? Be excited for what's coming next in life. I can think of it that way or pout about it. The grown up thing to do is accept that you have to make some sacrifices to get what you want. Also, it's time to let things go and move on. Not everyone holds a grudge and I bet they have less wrinkles and sleep better at night. I am going to give that a try and I bet you this weekend turns around in a hurry.

March On
Things are still going pretty well with Miserly March. I haven't kept up with tracking my spending, but I know I'm spending less. My diet, however, is on life support. My husband has been sick for almost two weeks and he cheers himself up with pizza. This has put us back to our old habits and the future is clear, if we don't stop it right now we will gain all the weight back. Another perfect excuse to go out and be bad is moving. We just found out after three and a half months of waiting that we will be moving in 35 days.
One problem we've had this year is that our apartment is less inviting than almost any other place we've lived. I know we've had places we liked less, but this apartment is tiny and faces a wall. I find myself using that as an excuse to go out to dinner. We keep telling ourselves that our new place will be so great that we'll want to spend more time at home cooking and hanging out. I'm worried that we'll still want to go out, but we won't be able to. When we talked about budget last night I felt a little concerned that we're headed for a lifestyle change. I just have to keep focusing on what I'm getting, not what I'm giving up.
I haven't been having trouble not buying other things, it's just going out that's a problem. This is the same issue I've had for years, and things will have to change. We are going to need to be on a very strict budget for at least the next six months. This is the cost of buying a house that's perfect for the foreseeable future instead of one that we know we'll only like for a couple years. While it's a smart move for the future it's going to be a tough adjustment for the present. I really do think it's going to be worth it.

Miserly March
It's time to buckle down. We heard back from the bank and it's going to require quite a bit more cash at closing than we were expecting, so we really have no choice. I was online looking for pictures to post around the house to inspire me to save money and I found several references to 30 day No Spending challenges.
Everyone knows there's nothing I love more than a gimmicky challenge with rules and rewards. Add to that it's the beginning of the month, which is a siren song to me for starting something new, and we have a full blown game on. I have posted No Spending pictures around the house with one of the vacation we have planned for this summer and the sofa we need for additional motivation. I read one post where they tracked what they spent on what and where each day so I posted a calendar on the front door.
I found several additional philosophies associated with the no spend concept. Some people feel that you not only stop bringing things into the house, but take the time to purge things you don't need as well so that at the end of the month you have spent less and have less stuff as well. Another comment that I loved was the idea that you use up all your pantry reserves even if that means eating the multiple cans of beans you got on sale. The idea being that you use what you have and get an opportunity to think about maybe not gathering up 20 cans of beans in the future.
Everything seems to point to one common theme and that is mindful consumption. One blogger even tracked what she wanted to spend money on but didn't. I found it very interesting because it was the same kind of stuff I would like to buy. She also kept it realistic by including a dinner out once per week in her allowed spending, it's supposed to be sustainable for a month after all.

The Rules For My No Spend March
- Groceries and Pharmacy are allowed but not additional buying and use pantry
- One dinner and one lunch out per week
- No spending on stuff or entertainment
- Track spending
Notes-
It took me a few days to finish this post, so in the mean time I have been putting all the no spending challenge tips to use. I have already noticed that I shave a few dollars off of every outing because I'm conscious of my goals. The other thing that sticks out immediately is that we both spend money on lunch at work. To be realistic we both agreed to try to spend less rather than stop having lunch out on work days. It makes the day nicer, and we aren't here to torture ourselves. I'm encouraged to keep going.

The Company You Keep
A friend at work that I see on a semi regular basis noticed that I'd lost some weight and asked how I'd done it. It took me a few moments to answer. I realized that one of the biggest factors in my current weight loss is who I have been spending my time with. I still go out to lunch and have wine on a regular basis and go to happy hour, but not 3+ times per week like I used to.
Last year I was working with a friend that had almost as much free time and spending money as me and it was so fun and easy to just skip out in the afternoon and have long wonderful lunch/happy hours. She no longer works close by and has taken a drastic pay cut in order to improve her life overall. That's one partner in crime that's gone from going out a few times a week to about once a month. We're both saving money and it's a real treat when we do get together.
My husband has stopped bringing home snacks and cooking multiple dinners per night so my temptations have been greatly reduced at home. That is such a relief! I used to feel so pissed off when he would have dinner then make several other things. Not only did I wonder why I bothered cooking, but also I like to eat anything I want whenever I want too and it doesn't help when other people are doing just that in front of you.
My priorities have recently changed as well as my weight. Deciding to buy a house quickly to take advantage of the lower interest rates and get out of the ridiculous rental market has put a focus on not spending extra money when possible. Going out to fancy dinners has been reduced significantly which is ok because we went everywhere over the holidays.
As a result of all of these changes around me I have lost some weight. It's amazing how losing some weight makes you feel better so you try to make better choices and work out more. It's just goes to show what a little positive reinforcement can do for your waist line and your bottom line.

2016: So Many Possibilities
I am so excited for this year!!! For starters I have finally made progress in my on going weight loss battle which gives me so much hope and momentum going into this year. I found my resolution plan from 2014 and I was desperate to get to 139 pounds. It wasn't until February 2015 that I achieved that goal after a massive toothache and a trip to Hawaii on the horizon. Since then my husband has joined me in the fight and things have really taken off. Of course, just like everyone else, the holidays have gotten me off the straight and narrow.
That's what's so amazing about the tradition of the New Years Resolution, you know I love a fresh start. This year I have a vision of a healthier me both inside and out. I'm usually so focused on my weight loss goals that I don't have room for anything else, but this year I feel ready. I expect to fail sometimes and to have to use various Mondays and holidays to reboot, but I will not give up.

House Hunting In Portland: Game On
It's official, my husband has made a solid case for buying a condo sooner rather than later. With interest rates threatening to rise and home and rent prices rising daily, it's time to get it together and take the plunge. Several articles came out recently listing the Portland rental market as some of the fastest rising rents in the country including this story by a local artist in the Willamette Week.
Last spring we downsized our rent around $400 per month by moving to a slightly less trendy section of downtown and parking our car for free at my in-laws. I felt very lucky to to find an apartment in a great spot that I found livable at that price and I am so thankful we made the decision to go for it. I do worry that if we don't buy soon we will get boxed out by the other people like us that do jump out of the rental market and into ownership. One thing is for sure, the rent is going to keep rising.
With that in mind I am going all in on the house hunt like I tend to do with any sort of fun project. I saw my wedding binder recently and it was truly something impressive! Haha!! Hopefully I can execute this project flawlessly in half the time it takes most people like I did with the wedding. I planned my ideal wedding and honeymoon in 4 months and I couldn't imagine doing that for a whole year.
We started looking about three weeks ago and I have already learned many things. The first and most important thing is, every place I have looked at and wanted has sold in approximately one week. That tells me that there will be no sleeping on decisions, it's yes or no then proceed. Our mortgage lender is a friend of ours and is on vacation until next week so we will get that together shortly. After that we just have to wait for something to hit the market. I hate waiting!!! I have three apps cued up to alert me of anything that comes on the market in my zip codes and budget. I feel so sad when I get up and there aren't any new places and so happy when I get an alert. This should keep me busy or drive me crazy, at the very least I'm in the game. The other thing that I have learned over and over again while looking is that you must stay true to the top three rules of real estate; location, location, location. I am constantly tempted by multiple bathrooms in less desirable areas! We already did that once and I refuse to let myself do it again!

Conflict Of Interest
Sometimes I feel like I am my own worst enemy. Not just in the going out spending and consuming way, but also in the not taking opportunities way. I will randomly go out on a weeknight, but say no to a weeknight invite ahead of time to a band or event. I could call it trying to follow my goals, but am I? Maybe I just don't want to try new things. I think I do, but what if I really don't? Sometimes I hear what other people are doing and I worry that my choices are wrong or worse boring.
I may succumb to the desire to go out on a weeknight, but the goal is always to wait until Friday. Is that even a worthy goal? On Sunday I like to relax and get ready for the week, like the Seinfeld Episode I have to wind down before I start my week. I have a friend that doesn't have that need at all. She calls it "bad decision Sunday" and treats it as if it was as good a day as Saturday. I am so jealous of that attitude. On the other hand, when I do go for it on a weeknight I end up often regretting it the next day. Monday feels daunting when you're in worse shape than you were Friday. I suppose a good compromise would be to try to stop the random going out for no reason and join in when a good opportunity comes along. I really am trying to save money and lose weight and none of those things are helpful. Life clearly can't be all about those two things. It's the constant struggle to achieve a balance between the things we want and the things we should want.

Get It Together Lady
I have a million valid excuses for why my exercise program is off track and why I felt I deserved more out dinners than my calories or bank account allow. None of them are good enough and I need to focus on how to get back on track.
I am going to go back to the incentive tracker I had before my trip to Hawaii when things were clicking. I get one point a day for staying on calorie budget and one for meeting my exercise goals when I hit 20 I get $20 for my vacation fund. I have a beach trip planned in a few weeks and I need to save up calories and money, I am really hoping this will be the incentive I need to get focused.
I love going out and having wine and summer is such a festive time. If I could stick to a reasonable amount of wine and food then I could justify going out more often. However, I have the worst track record for sticking to my calories once I have a glass of wine. I wish I knew why I don't want to achieve my goals bad enough to stop while I'm ahead.

What Is Perfect?
The topic of perfection comes up a lot in life, from a simple compliment to a philosophical discussion, perfection is a hot topic. I often say things like "This was a perfect eating day." or "What would I do on my perfect day?" The thing is, you can't really plan perfection. It's one of those things that either is or is not and is determined by that specific moment. You can plan for all the correct conditions to make perfect possible, but you can't predict how you will interpret the situation when it happens for real.
I took some time to think about my perfect day and I realized that the questions that come up are very practical. Is this a dream day and expense and location are no object? Is it a weekday that I'm off work and I accomplish things such as writing the great American novel? The one constant I found myself listing was no outside deadlines or pestering. I think that has amplified as a wish since work got busy. Nice weather and pool or beach side are also top of my list when location is no object. I find the idea of being warm and being by water very soothing.
What I would not have on my perfect day are worries such as, money, work and weight. With me, and probably most people, it comes back to those three main issues. I have said it a billion times, but if I spent less on eating and drinking out I could achieve the other goal of spending less money. It sounds so simple until I'm bored and or hungry. I saw a condo I wanted the other day for what I think is a great price and I realized it's my own fault I can't call up and just buy it. I have control of all of my biggest problems, which is both exciting and depressing. I have posted motivational signs around my house and I think they might help, but sometimes I just want to go out. The struggle for perfection continues.

So Much Fun, So Little Summer
It's been a long time between posts because life has been busy. Work has been busier and more stressful than normal which means a little more money, but a lot less free time. We went to California for a memorial service and were able to stay and enjoy a few days at Disneyland which was so much fun. You can get a lot of steps while having your fun there, thats for sure!
Things at home have been great! We are cooking a lot more and finding new recipes together. It's so nice not to make dinner and then have someone eat ramen noodles afterwards. I find that we have more things to do and talk about since we both share goals. Activities with walking are now suggested by both of us and we seem to try to tempt each other less with going out to dinner. Don't get me wrong, we still go out. That's one of our favorite things to do, we just go less often and to different places.
The one thing I feel like I need to work on is my weekday biking and long walks at a high intensity. I worry that I will be lighter, but not as ready for Portland to Coast this August. Last year I went for a lot of walks with my friend that walks really fast and I was not nearly as sore after the race. This year she has a job that keeps her really busy. That's helped me with the calories from long lunches and happy hours, but not the walking.
I have to work several weekends this summer, so I have booked two trips that are pool centered. This keeps me motivated for getting bathing suit ready and also cheers me up when I have to go to work. I just thought of another thing to work on, spending. Weight loss and money are my two biggest concerns. I over indulge in both causing me stress that triggers one or both of the things that caused the stress in the first place! I drive myself crazy sometimes. Oh well, I have to just keep trying. I do feel like I am making progress in both categories right now, so that feels great. Go team!

Truth Hurts
Sometimes you have to face the actual truth about yourself and it can really be a shock. My husband works hard and makes good money but we still use credit cards and aren't where we would like to be financially. The reason is me.
We both like to go out, but I like nice places. He would be just fine sitting at home all summer but I plan trips. It's a tough pill to swallow, but I have to really look at this behavior and do something about it. I need to find a way to make dining at home as enjoyable as going out! I like how we don't watch TV or work on our computers. I know I have talked about this before, but I like to have a conversation!!!! This is clearly the issue, or I need to get a full time job. The choice is mine.

2015 Day 3
It's always bitter sweet to put the Christmas decorations away. On the one hand everything looks less festive, but on the other it's much cleaner and fresher. I really do love a fresh start and this is going well so far. I took the first two days of the year to clean up and regroup after all the holidays.
Now I feel ready to get this year in gear. I rode the stationary bike and made breakfast at home, so far so good. I really do have two goals and luckily they compliment each other. I want to lose weight and save money. Since most of my money is spent on drinking and eating that should help. I always try to think of some fun incentive, but in the end it's only the shear will to achieve my goal that keeps me going. I still might pay myself to work out and eat at home, it sounds fun, in theory anyway.

Restaurant Addicts Diet: Forming a Plan
I actually surprised myself while writing my last post. I had intended to talk about my weight and how to make progress on losing some of it, but I ended up taking a look at the big picture. I came away with several questions for myself that required some thought. It ended up boiling down to this, I would like to weigh less and have more money in savings. All, of course, while not affecting my lifestyle.
This is a work in progress, but I really feel more aware of the choices I'm making since I began questioning everything. I find myself at the store thinking twice before I buy something and I have passed on several things I didn't need already. I have also chosen an inexpensive pizza dinner over a fancier option I may have wanted in the past. They have a wine I like, and their outdoor area was just as nice as some of the more expensive places. And you know what, I had a great time! Here are my ideas to save calories and money while still living the city lifestyle.

Restaurant Reductions:
- If I want to go to a high end place try lunch or better yet happy hour
- Have snacks and a few drinks at happy hour and have a light dinner on the patio at home
- Eat breakfast and lunch at home most of the time - keep a few things on hand
- Make a list of fun less expensive places - a patio is a patio
- Make a list of cheap and easy weeknight meals I can make-it's hot and salad is easy
- Look into getting a cheaper cable package - after Game of Thrones of course, lets get real
- Wash full loads of laundry and dishes
- Find out why I pay a monthly bank fee - find cheapest option
- Save electricity: keep blinds down to use less AC and turn off lights when I leave
- Shop around coupons and sales more

Restaurant Addicts Diet: Weighty Issues
I am not living up to my full potential where my life goals are concerned. I have a ton of fun, which is great, but I am not making progress towards the goals I said were important to me. Each week I set small goals towards the things I want to achieve such as steps, planks and logging my food intake. Why do I want to do these things? What is my motivation? Isn't having fun enough? So, I decided I needed to take a look at my true goals in order to re-motivate myself.
I want to lose weight. I am not that far away from my goal weight, and yet I can't seem to make it happen. I want to lose 13 pounds, but why?
Losing the weight would take more working out and that would mean I was in shape. When I'm in shape I feel more confident and find daily tasks easier. It is more fun to wear cute cloths and cute cloths are easier to find when I'm in shape. I think I would look younger if my face was less puffy.
I want to save money. I love to go out and eat and drink which is contrary to my goals, but adds so much fun to my life. My favorite thing to do is go out to bars and restaurants and eat and drink with friends. Unfortunately this is why I need to lose 13 pounds and why I have no savings.
I need savings in order to have a secure future. All the fun evenings won't make up for poverty in retirement. Buying a condo would help to secure my future and the discipline to do so will also impact eating habits.
It seems that if I ate out less I would save both money and calories resulting in two goals one stone. So why is it SO difficult not to go out to eat?! I can think of several reasons right off. First, I don't enjoy to cook. And even more so, when we go out to dinner my husband is forced not to be on the computer. We actually sit face to face and talk for 30-60 minutes straight. I feel like this is when we do our talking and make our future plans.
What's the solution? I do NOT want to stop going out it's my favorite thing, but I DO want to lose weight and save money. I need an action plan to achieve this that addresses the following; increase activity, make smarter food choices more often, save money everywhere possible, find less expensive restaurant options.
It sounds like I have my work cut out for me, but I do love a project that requires making lists. I am going to make a plan to help me maximize my fun and achieve goals. I know I have cuts both financially and caloric that I can make when it doesn't matter so that I an keep the things I love and still move forward. Wish me luck!

Restaurant Addicts Diet: A Week With Goals
Setting goals and stating them in last weeks post was a great idea! I did not meet all my goals, but I learned a lot. I only met one of my three goals now that I think about it, but I'm excited to try again this week.
I only hit 10,000 steps twice last week, but I really enjoyed tweeting #10ksteps when I did.
My most successful goal was do a plank a day. Previously I had read to hold the plank as long as you can five times. I hated doing it, so I didn't. This time I decided to do one plank and hold it as long as I can and I made it seven days in a row! I think it's improving my posture, and I can't wait to see how long I can keep the streak going.
Eating in until Thursday was my third goal and I caved in on Wednesday. This failure actually clued me in to something, it's not where I eat but what I eat.
Here are my goals for this week:
I'm really looking forward to meeting more goals next week. I have been having fun shopping and hanging out in my new neighborhood and I think that's giving me a positive attitude. I love spring!

Here are my goals for this week:
- 10,000 steps a day is a worthy goal, so I'm going to stick with it. I love tweeting #10ksteps when I meet my goal, I may even add a picture.
- My favorite returning goal is a plank a day. I had fun sharing my small wins last week on Twitter, so I'm going to tweet #plankit when I complete that goal for the day.
- My new goal this week is to record what I eat in Myfitnesspal. I don't enjoy to cook that much, and I do love to go out to eat. I want to lose weight, but I also need to be realistic about my lifestyle. Saving money is a very important goal also, but I think I'll try to focus on diet and exercise this week.

Restaurant Addicts Diet: Back On The Wagon
My second week back at work was a very busy one. I did pretty well, but after Super Bowl weekend it's time to get real about my goals. We have been invited to Hawaii for Christmas next year, and we want to stay for 2 weeks. Not only do I want to look fantastic in my bikini, but I also know how expensive it's going to be. With the Olympics to enjoy while hanging out at home it seems like a great time to do my best. The premade chicken cordon blues I bought were great and could not have been easier. Tonight I'm going to make a pot of chili, then tomorrow we can have chili dogs without the bun. I could really use a carb reduction in my life not to mention wine. One nice thing about work is I'm almost guaranteed to get my 10,000 steps in. Here's to a successful FABuary!

Restaurant Addicts Diet: Post Holiday Report
It has been a fantastic holiday season, from Thanksgiving through New Years I have enjoyed myself immensely. I had a terrible cold, but I didn't get sick until New Years day. It set me back a little on my exercise. I did manage to eat at most of the steak houses in Portland, but I also showed some restraint and cooked at home. I return to work tomorrow and I am looking forward to getting into a routine. I got a Fitbit Flex band for Christmas and I love it! I have the app on my phone and I tied in Myfitnesspal and the Withings scale app as well. I love having my steps counted into my overall daily exercise count. Last night I cooked jambalaya and tonight I'm making meatballs. I'm hoping to start a habit of cooking in. I looked over Mint and I really think I have reduced my overall spending on food and beverage. I really would like to achieve my goal of losing weight and saving money in 2014.

I'm Addicted To Restaurant Food
I admit it, I'm addicted to restaurant food. It works directly against both my sensible goals of saving money and losing weight. Unfortunately, the closer it gets to dinner time all I want is anything but what I have at home. I not only love the food at restaurants, but the whole experience. No shopping, prepping, cooking or clean up. Plus I get to sit and have a face to face uninterrupted conversation with my husband. We have a small apartment, and there isn't room for a dinner table so the formality of an actual table and chairs feels decadent. Sometimes I just really need that bit of fun and escape mid week. The worst part is I'll settle for takeout just so I don't have to face the whole dinner preparation situation. I realize that I could save a ton of money and have a larger condo that does fit a table if I could just embrace fixing dinner at home. Even assembling things purchased from the grocery store would be a huge improvement.
This is why my husband and I have agreed next week to make dinner at home Sunday through Thursday. (Well, who are we kidding I go out to dinner on Fridays.) I'm already nervous, but how bad can it be? I've thought of a million reasons why it won't work out, but I do love a challenge so lets see how it goes.
